Our Raku Kiln and Firing Process
The Raku firing process involves applying raku glaze to bisqueware, firing the pots in a Raku kiln to a temperature of around 1850 degrees fahrenheit, and then removing the red hot pieces with tongs to a reduction chamber filled with combustible materials like saw dust or newspaper. The chamber is covered to create an oxygen-deprived (reduction) enviornment, which produces unique, unpredictable metallic lusters, crackle patterns, and smokey, charcoal effects on the glaze and clay. In the final stage, pieces are removed from the reduction chamber with tongs and placed in water to cool.
